Memory of Sourav winds up Shane Warne
INT20International/SportsMemory of Sourav winds up Shane WarneBy Dipankar De SarkarLondon, Oct 5 IANS Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, taken back into the team after being dropped, is among 11 Indians named by Australian spinner Shane Warne in his list of 100 greatest cricketers. But the Indian clearly irks Warne - enough for the Aussie to claim India's famous Test series win against Australia in 2000 was due to cricketers other than skipper Sourav. The list of greats, which forms a new book called "Shane Warne's Century", is headed by Sachin Tendulkar and includes all members of the famed Indian batting quartet dubbed the Fab Four - Sachin, Sourav, Rahul Dravid and V.V.S. Laxman. The other seven Indians in Warne's list are: Anil Kumble, Virender Sehwag, Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammad Azharuddin and Harbhajan Singh. The chapter on Sourav looks set to add the long-running public row between the Indian batsman and Warne - the Indian has got under the skin of every cricketing captain, and Warne doesn't look to be an exception. Warne describes Sourav as "an intelligent bloke, with some interesting ideas on all sorts of subjects" and pays tributes to Sourav's batting, fighting qualities and self-confidence. "But he did have the knack of rubbing up opponents and even teammates when he went to Lancashire the wrong way without seeming to try very hard. If this was part of a deliberate strategy, then he got it bang on at times." When Australia arrived in India for the 2000 series, Sourav said the team had only beaten weak teams in the past, Warne recalls, adding: "Funny, that, as India were one of them." "He would also be late for the toss and then walk off on his own without waiting for Steve Waugh, our captain. To be a minute or so behind because an issue crops up is one thing, but more than that is just taking the mickey. "He will say that the results are in the book and, yes, India did beat us in that series - thanks, I would say, to a great stand between Laxman and Dravid at Calcutta now Kolkata and Harbhajan's bowling rather than any tactical genius on Ganguly's part. On this, as on practically everything else, Ganguly splits opinion." The comments came after an altercation between Sourav and Warne during the IPL tournament this year when the Australian criticised the Indian for questioning a catch claimed off his batting. Although the verdict went in favour of Sourav, the Australian complained that he had violated the spirit of the game, prompting the feisty Indian to respond: "Look who's talking!" Both were fined 10 percent of their match fees. --Indo-Asian News Servicedds/mv/dg494 Words05101447
2008-10-05 07:02:07Roger Moore wrote his memoirs at dawn
Washington, October 12 ANI: James Bond star Sir Roger Moore has revealed that he wrote most part of his autobiography 'My Word Is My Bond' in the early hours of the morning, as he would recall many anecdotes only in his sleep. The actor who debuted as Bond in he Live and Let Die in 1973 often struggles to remember magical moments. He says that he would often recall an amusing anecdote from his past in the middle of the night, but forget it by the morning. Finally, says Sir Roger, he started getting up early every day and working on his manuscript at dawn. "Sometimes it was easy, sometimes it wasn't. The thing that really drove me mad was I would wake up at three in the morning with an idea and think 'Ah, I remember that, yes, my God, I did that' and then go back to sleep happy and content that I'd thought of something new. I'd wake up later and I'd forgotten completely what it was," Contactmusic quoted him as telling WENN."I found that writing between five and eight in the morning was the best time in the world because the phone does not ring and you have no distractions, apart from dustbin vans reversing and things like that," he added. Moore's autobiography was released in the U.K. on September 29. ANI

New York, Oct 3 ANI: Controversial comedienne Sandra Bernhard has dismissed earlier reports that she said Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin would be "gang-raped by my big black brothers" if she enters Manhattan."I never said 'gang-raped' and I never used 'rape,' " the New York Daily News quoted Bernhard, as saying.Bernhard was widely condemned after reportedly making the remark in her opening monologue during a show last month at Washington, D.C.'s Theater J.The funny woman's explanation comes following the announcement that she has been dropped as the keynote speaker for mid-October benefit at Rosie's Place, a women's shelter in Boston. The 53-year-old decided to set the record straight only after 'it caused damage to an innocent charity'."As a performer, I'm not in the business of explaining myself to ill-informed critics. However, once this caused collateral damage to an innocent charity which does great work, I needed to correct things for the record," she added.Bernhard wouldn't recall the exact words she had spoken, citing her monologue's improvisational nature, but said she "addressed the issue that if Sarah Palin had, God forbid, been violated, would she be willing to care for the baby"Despite being dropped from the charity, Bernhard said that she has no hard feelings towards Rosie's Place, and plans to make a donation 'immediately' to the shelter."I understand the predicament they're in," she said. 2008-10-02 02:39:07Goa smokers take their last puffs in favourite café
NAT5National/Health/Law/SocietyGoa smokers take their last puffs in favourite caféBy Mayabhushan NagvenkarPanaji, Oct 1 IANS It's evening and a haze of bluish smoke hovers sluggishly over a few tables at Café Prakash, a watering hole near the Mandovi river that fringes this Goan capital.Café Prakash is popular with journalists, out-of-office politicians, activists and several other social mavericks. You get the day's gossip with your cups of sweet milky tea.In the evenings, most of the tables are cornered by journalists, who puff away at their cigarettes as they get ready for their shifts on the news desks. But with the smoking ban coming into effect Thursday, they are gearing up for a tectonic change in their lifestyle.Kalpesh Sakhalkar, who runs Café Parkash, hints that smokers may just have to wind up their act. "We'll lose some customers who come in for a smoke along with their cup of tea. But then, on the other hand, my father and I may live longer," he quips, indicating that passive smokers could now breathe easy.Erol Jorge, an assistant news editor with a leading national daily, is already confronting a new kind of withdrawal symptom, as he smokes his last few cigarettes at the café. "We all know smoking is bad for health, but I smoke three cigarettes a day and technically that makes me a non-smoker," Jorge told IANS.A deputy news editor at a local English daily and a regular Café Prakash patron, Ashley do Rosario claims that he would play it by the ear. "I'll still come to this place and smoke, till such time I'm caught. Then maybe I'll shift to my car for a smoke. Worse comes to worst, I may quit."There are others like social activist Anil Naik who was puffing away his woes after he was suspended from work.Septuagenarian Nagesh Karmali, president of the Goa Freedom Fighters' Association, is a café frequenter too. He can recall cigarette smoking lore over many years. "Passing Show was the cheapest but a popular cigarette brand then. It was imported from England. It was the colonial equivalent of the Charminar brand."A non-smoker now, Karmali is caught between two smokers as he speaks. He is desperate to find another seat. "Inhaling smoke makes me uneasy now," he complains.Ralin Sequeira is one of the smokers flanking Karmali. "Why don't they stop the source Once cigarette manufacturing is stopped, they'll solve the problem once and for all," he says, adding that he's even willing to shell out some money to drop by the café for a smoke. The Goa government is in no mood to listen to smokers like Ralin. It's going out of its way to ensure that the new amendments to the Smoking in Public Places Rules 2008 are implemented firmly. A special task force has been formed to ensure that the rules are enforced strictly.National Organization for Tobacco Eradication NOTE, a Goa-based anti-tobacco organisation which has been lobbying for this ban, is happy. It is gearing up for the implementation phase. "We are happy that a task force will be empowered to enforce the act and not the police. This ban will work because now the onus of keeping a place smoke-free rests not on the smokers, but on the proprietors. It will act as a firm deterrent," Shekhar Salkar, general secretary of NOTE, told IANS.NOTE, which has in the past taken celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan to court for having been shown on film posters chewing a cigar, has also begun a drive to recruit National Social Service NSS volunteers from colleges and manpower from other NGOs to help the task force enforce the ban on smoking."We already have a tobacco control cell. Now we will set up a task force for each of the two districts in Goa," Salkar said, adding that the task force teams planned to conduct inspections every week at public places, which have been listed in the new legislation."We are also pursuing a hike in the fines from Rs.200 to Rs.5,000 per violator," he said, adding that he had discussed the issue with Goa's Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane.Mayabhushan Nagvenkar can be contacted at mayabhushan@gmail.com--Indo-Asian News Servicemaya/jg/ky/tb755 Words**01100927

SPO11SportsSymonds fails on returnMelbourne, Sep 28 IANS Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds made a low key comeback as he failed twice against the visiting Kolkata Knight Riders team.Playing two Twenty20 practice matches for the Queensland Bulls, Symonds faced a total of just nine deliveries in his two innings at Allan Border Field. The 33-year-old was caught in the deep for two in the first match -- and was dismissed for one in the second match when he skied a catch to the wicketkeeper. It was hardly the outing that Symonds wanted as he tries to convince national selectors he is ready for a recall following his axing for disciplinary reasons in Darwin, the Courier Mail reports. However, he fared better with his medium pace - sending down three consecutive maidens in the first match and finishing with the figures of 0-8 from four overs. He finished with 2-24 off three overs in the second match.Bulls won the opening match but lost the second clash.--Indo-Asian News Serviceav/dg179 Words28091646
